I contacted the folks producing the Ed Sullivan DVD's and suggested they produce one of all the magic acts through the years. I received the following response:
"In fact, "Ed Sullivan's Greatest Novelty
Acts" and "Ed Sullivan's Amazing Stars of Magic" are two specials that are currently in production. As of yet, there is no release date for either title."
Definitely something to look forward to!!!

Carl Ballantine, definitely. I have a video of his Sullivan appearance. There is also Richiardi doing his razor blades and thread routine and he appeared a second time, but I can't recall which routine he did. Another magician I have on tape is "The Great Carrazini."

Last year one of our Tampa area public stations was broadcasting the "Best of the Ed Sullivan" shows on Saturday night. I "tivo'd" them and reviewed each for magicians.
I have clips of Al Koran, Fantasio, Rene Levand, Tommy Cooper and, although not magic, Senor Wences and Joy Kay.
I was certain I had a Jay Marshall clip, but it's not where it's supposed to be and I have to search 11 hard drives to find it.
I'll be happy when the Sullivan magic DVD's are issued.

When the Ed Sullivan show started it was called "Toast Of The Town" and the producer was Marlo Lewis and the agent that booked magicians and novelty acts was Mark Leddy.
Billy Bishop (My Dad) was on the first year anniversary program of Toast of the Town before the show name was changed to the "Ed Sullivan Show."
Back then they had an hours time to fill so a lot of the acts during the first year appeared twice on the same program. My Dad did the rope tie with Ed and Boxer Jake Lamotta "Raging Bull."
The second spot on the same show my dad pitched to Marlo Lewis and the other people that produced the show an idea that they could and did use to close the show with. My Dad appeared as a magic baker and mixed up a cake (In a Dove Pan) and produced an anniversary cake for Ed on the first anniversary program.
The camera went in for a close up of the cake and then cut to another larger cake that looked the same. Out of the large cake sprang the Rocketts from Radio City Music Hall.
Back quite a few years ago my parents were contacted by Sofa productions and they wanted to use the footage for the show when it came out a few years ago. When the programs were re-broadcasted in syndication.
Just as a note. After the meeting with Marlo Lewis and his staff at CBS and they liked the cake idea my Dad got into a taxi and went to Tannens magic shop and purchased a dove pan. The man behind the counter who sold him the dove pan was a very young Frank Garcia.
I just got the information by e-mail about Jake Lamotta the "Raging Bull" from my brother and my Mom who live out west who remembered the boxer's name who helped my Dad with the rope tie on the "Toast Of The Town."

The effect I remember Richardi doing in the
Sullivan Show was a levitation of a small boy
in a toy car next to a gas pump.There used to be
a site that listed all the contents of all the
shows but I can't find it now.Seem like there
were a lot more magicians on Sullivan that you
guys are nameing.....Mike

If you go to your DVD store, they sell a DVD set of The four complete Ed Sullivan Shows featuring the Beatles.
On the first disk is Fred Kaps and on the fourth disk is Fantasio.
The odd fact about the Kaps appearance on the first beatle show was that Kaps wasn't there live, his performance of the homing card and salt trick was a previously taped segment.

Kalanag did the show at least twice as I recall. Marvyn and Carol Roy did were on something like a dozen times over the years.
It is my understanding that Cardini did not do the show because they wouldn't pay him enough money. Immortality lost...

I recall a magician, The Great Franken, or something close to this name being on the show; I was impressed as a kid that this guy came out and vanished a radio-- if I recall correctly, the radio was blarring out music and, like the vanishing bird cage, poof! The radio vanished!
I am 99% sure it was the Sullivan show...

Mark Leddy, the talent coordinator for the Ed Sullivan, booked Marvyn and Carol on the Ed Sullivan Show 24 times. Including the Russian show. This had many amusing stories relatng to it. Some, I believe, are in Marvyn's wonderful book.

I had inquired of the company a couple years ago about a "specialized" set of Magician performances and was told that it was being considered....as well as "other" compilations. It has not yet been produced and frankly, I'm doubtful that it ever will.
I recently bought two sets on Amazon: Best of Ed Sullivan and Very Best of Ed Sullivan. Each set was 4 DVD's. I reviewed the contents before buying and I was "somewhat convinced" there was no duplication. There was.
Each set contains "The Greatest Entertainers" and "Unforgettable Performances".
The "Best Of" set also includes "Best of Broadway Musicals" and "Ed's Amazing Animal Acts".
The "Very Best of" set includes the 2 DVD Beatles show set.
The ONLY Magic is included on the Beatles set: Fred Kaps and Fantasio. That's it.
The best part of that purchase was that while each set listed at about $40.00, I paid 24.00 for BOTH sets, including postage.
I guess that should have been my first clue. I'm glad I bought them tho'....they satisfy my need to see 5 or 6 different plate-spinner acts!!!
And I actually enjoy seeing Richard Burton and Julie Andrews in their "Camelot" performance. (I saw the show on Broadway and had an orchestra seat, on the aisle, for $6.50!!!

Has anyone ever talked to Dick Cavett about releasing DVD's of his magic guests. I saw someone ask him about that on his NY Times blog, but did not see an answer. As a former magician, would he be more open than Carson's company on this? I would love to see the Slydini episodes.

I had the good fortune to see Richard Ross do the Rings and the Clock routine in 1976 or 1977. If I had never seen the rings after that, it would've been OK.
His was a masterful performance.

I remember reading that when Dick Cavett's house in the Hamptons burned to the ground (1980's?) he had all his shows in that house, and lost all the shows.
I highly doubt that because he over the past couple of years he's released several DVD collections:
