He became seriously interested in magic in 1934 and was an honorary life member of Southport Magic Circle, a member of the British IBM Ring 25, and was the book, magazine and trick reviewer for The Budget

Potter indexed nearly 100,000 tricks and routines by categories and published them in his "Potter's Bar" column in both The Linking Ring and The Budget. Known as Potter's Index, it was later published as The Master Index to Magic in Print. [1][2]
