Hilliard was dramatic critic with The Chicago Herald and later on the staff of The Rochester (N. Y.) Post Express. After moving to New York, he met [[Howard Thurston]] while a reporter on The New York World and became interested in magic. John was credited with securing the master magician with his first engagement on the stage. Several years later Thurston induced Hilliard to give up his newspaper work and become his personal representative.
Having a background in magic that spans over 45 years, '''Scott Wells''' is a performer, publisher, author, teacher, consultant, lecturer, collector, designer, artist and friend to magicians the world over. Scott has taught magic to neophytes in continuing education classes and lectured to professional magicians from Aberdeen, Scotland to [[The Magic Castle]]. He has a three and a half hour “At The Table” lecture available from Murphy’s Magic Supplies. He is a co-founder of two [[International Brotherhood of Magicians]] (I.B.M.) Rings (Lincoln, NE and Midland, TX) and currently the Territorial Vice President for Texas for the I.B.M.  He has served on the I.B.M. Board of Trustees for a three-year term from July 2004-07.  He also served as the Convention, Facilities and Site Selection Chairman for the I.B.M. and later as Co-Chairman of the Convention Committee as well as other committees for the I.B.M. He also wrote the Job Description Manual for the I.B.M. which is still in use decades later. Scott is a member of several organizations including a life member of the I.B.M., the [[Society of American Magicians]] (S.A.M.) and a life member of London’s [[Magic Circle]] where he holds the highest degree of membership, Member of the Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star.


With the urging of [[Floyd G. Thayer]], John starting writing for [[Thayer's Magical Bulletin]] magazine. In 1925, Hilliard became an advance man for The Thurston show. During this time he accumulated notes on what he was learning about magic. In 1932, Carl Waring Jones urged him to turn his notes into a book, offering to publish it. But Hilliard suddenly died of a heart attack in 1935 while in a hotel room in Indianapolis.
