Arutiun Akopian (1918-2005) was an illusionist and actor who began performing professionally in the 1930's in Moscow. He became popular all over Russia in the 1960s and 70s and toured in many countries of the world.
Biography
He started in the construction trade, then was a substitute teacher, dance teacher, and an engineer.
In 1937, Akopian entered Moscow’s Institute of Organization of Land Exploitation. While in Moscow, Akopian saw his first magician. He decided to learned a few tricks, but left magic after his failed first public appearance. He entered Mosgosestrada (Moscow’s Actor’s Organization) and started practicing magic every day eventually becoming a full-time professional magician.
He wrote seven books on magic.[1][2]
Awards
- In 1950, Akopian was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Armenia.
- In 1961, the People’s Artist of the USSR (the first and only People’s Artist of the USSR among magicians)
