Breakaway Fan

Breakaway Fan (or Break Apart Fan) is a woman's fan which spreads open normally one time, but at other times (usually when a spectator tries) it splits into several separate sections.

It was being sold by dealers by 1843 and became a pet trick of Robert Nickle (who is often credited as inventing, but most likely only popularizing it).
