Coney Island

Coney Island is a peninsula, formerly an island, in southernmost Brooklyn, New York City with a beach on the Atlantic Ocean.

The area was a major resort and site of amusement parks that reached its peak in the early 20th century. It declined in popularity after World War II and endured years of neglect.

Magicians that have performed at the resort have included:

• Harry Houdini with his brother Dash as "The Brothers Houdini" and met this wife Bess there.
• Al Baker had a photo studio
• Jean Hugard owned and performed in a magic theater in Luna Park (at Coney Island) from 1919-1929.
• Cary Grant (before he was famous) once worked as a stilt walker on the boardwalk advertising Steeplechase Park.
• Al Flosso, known as The Coney Island Fakir, worked in sideshows
• Larry Grey as a magic pitchmen while Dai Vernon cut silhouettes in the same booth. Dai met his wife, Jeanne Hayes at Coney Island.
• Henry Roltair constructed illusions for Coney Island amusements, including the Upside Down House and Arabian Nights Up-to-Date.
