Abraham Colorni (1544-1599) was an Italian engineer who performed card tricks.[1]

Biography

His skill in his profession caused him to be much sought after, and in 1578 he held the position of engineer at the court of Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, who sent him to Prague in 1588.

Colorni was famous not only as an engineer and mechanician, but also as a mathematicians and archaeologists. Other accomplishment included dueling and magic. Among Colorni's inventions was a type of ten-chambered revolver.

Colorni was the author of a treatise upon the art of writing in cipher, entitled "Scotographia o Vere Scienza di Scrivere Oscuro Facilissima et Securissima per Qualsi Voglia Lingua" (Prague, 1593).[2]

Thomas Garzoni mentions in La Piazza Universale di tutti le Professioni del Mondo (1626) that Abraham Colorni made a mentally selected card rise out of the pack, possibly one of the first published descriptions of a Rising Cards effect. Other tricks were described in the book and in the following one, posthumous, of Garzoni: Il Serraglio degli Stupori del Mondo (1613).
