Alexander Heimburger (1818-1909) was born Johann Friedrich Alexander in Germany and billed himself as "Alexander the Conjurer".
He began his performing career as a magician early in life and as an exhibitor of Phantasmagoria, but was relatively unsuccessful until he came to North America in the 1840s. He had great success and even performed for President Polk in the White House.
Alexander had a trick called, "The Spirit Bell", a large glass bell, on top of a fancy looking case, which he could set anywhere, and it would ring at command.
His daughter assisted him in the presentation of a second sight act. Upon her death during the tour, Heimburger returned to Germany. Having made a considerable fortune he retired in his late 20s and spent the remaining 50 some years of his life in relative seclusion.
He was long figured dead by the fraternity of magic, until Harry Houdini, during one of his tour, found his whereabouts.[1]
