Originally called the Cardiff Magical Society (C.M.S.) it was founded in March, 1954. The first president was Desmond Hill, with founder members Eric Sharp and Rendle Morris providing the initiative and energy to get things going. The first meetings were in the YMCA Building, Station street, Cardiff, UK.

Members have included Howard Gower, Tudor Brock and Bill Cheal. Founder member Bill Bafico, with his wife Val, formed the noted and popular oriental act 'The Soo Lings'. Later their son's act, Roger John and Cynthia, took awards for manipulation in the IBM British Ring Shield and also won the coveted Grand Prix of the British Magical Championship at Blackpool in 1993. Ian James alias Taffy the Clown won the highly acclaimed Grimaldi award. Also in the IBM British Ring Shield, members Paul Anthony and Trina won the Silver Wand award. Paul Anthony is the owner of Magic Supreme Ltd formerly Supreme Magic.

Other members have included Ken Perks, illustrator of the instructions of Ken Brooke items and Ray Kingswell who manufactured both Ken Brooke and Lunar effects.

Down the years the society has played host to visits from many famous names in magic from Cardini to Derren Brown and Paul Daniels to name but a few.

As of 11th November 2019 the society changed its name to the Cardiff Magic Society.
