Carl Brema (1864 - 1942) was a magic manufacturer whose company "Carl Brema & Co." (in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was well known for producing precision made brass apparatus.

Biography

His start in Magic was due to Robert Nickel. In 1886, he gave his first professional performance in Philadelphia. Then spent time doing club and vaudeville work in the city. Starting around 1913, he started devoting time to manufacturing apparatus. [1]

His most popular was the Nickels To Dimes effect invented by his friend Walter Gibson.

Carl retired in 1932, but his son Bill carried on for some time until sold to George Krinog after Carl's death.[2]

The book The Brema Brasses by Richard Buffum tells the story behind Carl and his son. It expands on some of the famous brass effects including "Nickels to Dimes" and the "Bill and Card Tubes". It also contains information on many notable conjurers like Goldin, Kellar, Houdini and Thurston.

Original Brema apparatus and catalogs are very collectible today.

His son, Bill Brema would carry on the magic tradition and was associated with Kanter's Magic Shop.
