Edwin A. Dearn (1892-1980), an intimate friend of Max Malini, was an amateur magician and collector.

Biography

Dearn became interested in magic in 1913 and spent a great number of his early years in China.

Along with magic, Dearn performed ventriloquism and impersonations in the Shanghai district of China in theaters, halls, and homes. He also entertained many world-famous magicians in his home.[1]

He was a member of the Magicians' Club, Magic Circle (AIMC) and the China Representative to the I.B.M.. He carried I.B.M. No. 297 having first joined in the 1920s. He rejoined in 1951 and was active until the mid-seventies. He was an Honorary Life Member of Ring 102.

He was also an avid collector of magic memorabilia and books and was in constant communication with fellow collectors around the world. His collection contained magical works (2,000 items) and magical apparatus. [2] The Shanghai local magazine, :"The Town Traveller", for June, 1926, contains an illustrated article entitled "The E. A. Dearn Collection."

When Mao Tse-tung overran China in the early 1950's, Dearn escaped to Sydney, Australia after being held captive for two years.
