George L. Edloff (c.1861-1940), an enthusiastic amateur, was one of the early I. B. M. and an uncle of Nate Leipzig (Leipzig's mother's maiden name was Edloff).

Biography

A one-time office boy and associate of Thomas A. Edison, he helped interest the young Leipzig in magic and encouraged him in beginning his professional career. He also help his great nephew Royal H. Brin, Jr. get started in magic.

Born in Utica, New York in 1861, he moved to Detroit at the age of four.

In 1878 he went to New York City to serve as office boy and laboratory assistant to Thomas Edison during the time Edison was working on the incandescent light, the electric fan and the phonograph.

Most of Edloff's business career was spent with a large soap manufacturer, as a salesman and district sales manager.

In traveling about the country as a salesman he would walk into a store and perform a few tricks for the owner before starting the sales talk. He also frequently performed at benefits and for charitable purposes.

In 1884 he married Minnie Harris, and his golden anniversary in 1934 received publicity in the Detroit papers.

The Edloffs spent many of their winters in Dallas, Texas where he known as "Uncle George" to many Dallas youngsters.[1]

Edloff passed away in 1940 at the age of 79.[2]
