Herbert Brooks (1873-1923) was a British stage magician that began performing as a magician and escape artist in England. Then in 1903, he went to America to performed in the Vaudeville.

Biography

He became more successful there after removing the trunk escape for awhile (in order to stop competing with Houdini) and concentrated on cards. He became famous for with his cards from the pocket, the instant production of any card called for by the audience.

In 1913 he returned to England, where he had continued to have success. He had upgraded to a steel trunk, from which he could escape just as easily from the wooden one.

In 1921 he announced his retirement with a week of performances at the Majestic in Chicago. However, the theatrical papers continued to report appearances of Brooks at various places including one at the Junior Orpheum in San Francisco in 1922 and in Wichita, Kansas in 1923.[1]
