Houdini's Escapes was prepared by Walter Gibson, after Houdini's death in 1926, from the magicians private notebook and with the assistance of his widow, Beatrice. Also with the help of his friend and attorney, Bernard M. L. Ernst, then President of the Society of American Magicians.

It was also published as Houdini's Escapes and Magic by Blue Ribbon Books in 1930. ("Houdini's Magic" was also released as a separate book in 1932 also by Harcourt, Brace & Co.)
