Howard Savage (1908-1935), a member of the Parent Assembly of The Society of American Magicians, was the first amateur to win The Sphinx Award medal for his trick "The Mentalist's Handy Code".

Biography

He attended the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts, where he won a scholarship in sculpturing and then became a artist on the staff of the "New York American."

He and his brother James constructed a marionette show. They also produced "Sketcho The Great," a cartoon strip describing tricks, which was a monthly feature in The Sphinx during the 1930s. Soon after, Howard Savage began making a majority of the drawings for illustrations for The Sphinx.

Savage died of heart trouble at home.[1]
