Jim Rainho, resides in Medford, Massachusetts. He was born in Portugal and immigrated to the US at the age of nine. Jim became interested in magic at a very young age, but did not approach it seriously until he was sixteen, when he took a Summer time job working at a Revere Beach (Massachusetts) sideshow assisting magician Ed Arno. It was the doorway to his life long career in magic. While with the side show he invented his first magic trick, the production of a lit candle from an empty scarf. This opened another door to inventing and manufacturing his original magic creations.

In the interim he also became involved in music, starting his own Country and Western group, the Rhythm Ramblers, became a electronics technician, a sound recording engineer, and wrote CW songs, with some being published.

He mixed magic and music, but eventually went into magic full time, performing in night clubs, until a stint in the US Army interrupted his plans, On his return to civilian life he took up magic where he had left off, but the night club scene was fast doing its own disappearing act. The ones that survived did away with live entertainment in favor of a 'magic box' that changed show business forever.

Jim opened Atlantic Electronics & Recording Studio facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which he operated until the early Sixties. Jim was still inventing and building magic which he sold through Holden’s Magic Shop in Boston. When Holden’s closed down Jim released his first catalog of his creations and began manufacturing his items full time under the name SIMPLEX MAGIC. His creations were carried by Abbott's, Tannen's, Diamond Magic, Ireland's, Magic Factory, and many other dealers nationally and internationally, Some of his creations are: the electronic production candles (Flash Candle & Omega Candle ). Flame of Kan-Del, Fountain of Silks with Candle Production, Fountain of Silks with Dove Production, Color Symphony (color changing records) the first SAFE Invisible Dove Harness. and over 100 other items that he still sells on his web site. . He has also contributed to magic periodicals, such as: Genii, Magick, Linking Ring, MUM, Vibrations, Ireland Magic's Year Books, etc. The Encyclopedia of Magic & Magicians credits Jim with the trend of using candles in magic acts.

Jim is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (Order of Merlin - Excelsior), the Society of American Magicians, and the Associação Portuguesa de Ilusionismo. He has served as President of the IBM Silent Mora Ring 122.

Jim married Alice Costa, his long time sweetheart , soon after his army discharge, and has three daughters and a son. He still performs his magic and “Close Encounters with ESP” mentalism show, His venues have been private parties, school assemblies, corporate events, trade shows, restaurant promo events, etc, Last year he was contracted to appear at the New Year's Reveillon Celebration in the Portas Do Mar Pavilion in Ponta Delgada in the Azores.

Jim's hobby is collecting B Western movies. He has a vast knowledge of the genre.
