John C. Green (1866-1951) was a professional magician that performed for most of his 73 years of active performing in small rural communities across Canada.[1]
Biography
His first Magic show was as a boy of 12 after he had ran away from Boston and got himself a job on a train running between Toledo and Columbus. He was inspired to seek his fortune in show business after seeing a circus. He answered a New York Clipper ad and joined H. L. Mountford's European Museum which showed freaks in stores. He became a talker and on occasions would fill in for their magician, Jim Harrington.
He went out on his own and toured many years, in vaudeville and in Chautauqua, and later with a partner, Dick Jackson, as the Jackson and Green Indoor Circus.[2]
For most of his life he gave a two shows show comprised of smaller effects with a large quantity of apparatus with which he combined sleight-of-hand.[3] His extensive repertoire allowed him to change his programs nightly during his engagements.[4]
His early experience as a barker for a side-show and his knowledge of the Vitascope (a moving picture projector), made it possible for him to succeed.
Green was an inspiration to Micky Hades who compiled a book in his memory.[5]
Green was probably the oldest active full evening show magician in North America at the time of his death, which happened after his show at Vegreville, Alberta, Canada.[6]
