Ludwig Hanemann (October 27, 1907 - February 11, 1996), known as Punx, was a bizarrist, magician, and mentalist from Germany. During the height of his fame, he was as popular in Germany as David Copperfield was in the United States.

In his typical show, he portrayed the characters Cagliostro, Eulenspiegel, Munchhausen, and Punx, whith each having an appropriate costume and different presentations.

Punx was as artistic as he was controversial. He would go to great lengths to produce a perfect presentation. Some magicians resented Punx, because he would only allow those that he deemed able to perform is pet routines the rights to perform them.

Over the years he contributed articles to the German magic magazine Magie and GENII

Bill Palmer translated several of Punx's works from German to English including Magical Adventures and Fairy Tales, Fourth Dimensional Mysteries and Farewell Performance.[1][2]

Awards and Honors

  • Hofzinser Ring in 1948 (given to those that most closely emulated the striving of Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser to present magic artistically).
  • honorary life member, and in 1989 he was made the dean of the P.E.A.
