Baron Nicu "Nikolay" de Barcsy (1885-1976) appeared as "the Original Colibri" performing handcuff and stock escapes.[1][2]

Biography

His mother Sidonia married the cavalry officer, Baron Anton de Barcsy (pronounced Bar-shee). Little Nicu was born perfectly proportioned and seemingly healthy, but weighed less than two pounds. Twelve days after Nicu's birth, Sidonia noticed a downy fuzz growing on her chin and cheeks which eventually turned into a full chestnut-colored beard. Baron de Barcsy was forced to accept that not only was his son a dwarf, but he was married to a bearded woman. They toured in Europe for 15 years. The de Barcsy family immigrated to the United States in 1903, performing with a number or circuses and finally settling in Drummond, Oklahoma with the Campbell Brothers Circus in 1914.

Nicu retired from show business in 1932 in Drummond as an eccentric celebrity. Nicu freeloaded meals from neighbors and demanded that gawking tourists pay him fifteen cents to watch his trained dog smoke a pipe. The townspeople would take up a collection to pay for burial expenses when died after having lived in a nursing home starting the 1960s.[3]
