Pink Lawrence (1866-1942), an ardent magical enthusiast, discovered Howard Thurston in New York City, playing in a vaudeville house in the early 1890's. Three years later, he brought him to the South and started him on his road to fame.

Biography

Thurston was a life-long friend and would visit him in Nashville often. He used to display a cancelled check for one thousand dollars, representing a loan to Thurston. Thurston's daughter, Jane, refereed to him as Uncle Pink.[1]

He performed as "Laurence The Magician". At the time of this death, was one of the oldest living members of the Society of American Magicians, of which he was a charter member (member no. 55). He was also a long time member of the I.B.M. and the "permanent" president of the Nashville Cercle Magique which he helped organize in 1922.[2]
