The Art of Deception was serialized in the Linking Ring from November 1994 to March 1997.

There are no tricks in the book, only the story of the art and artists who have captured some facet of the art of magic including magic lithographs from Scots’s Discoverie of Witchcraft through today. The book covers the early depictions of the cups and balls, such as the drawings of Joseph of Ulm and Bruegel, and the painting of Hieronymus Bosch. Recognition of Richard Kaufman's influence as a magic illustrator is described.

The 550 copies in book for sold out and was reviewed in Genii 1997 June.

The 2008 edition has corrections and a “reflections” section added to the end of each chapter. The reflection sections add new information about many of the artists featured in the book.
