Years in MagicPedia

Great start on the Year pages! I thought you might find this interesting http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=1&tbs=tl%3A1&q=site%3Ageniimagazine.com%2Fwiki%2F&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi= (Google Timeline) Joe P. 03:55, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

Year categories

Do you think we need a Category for each year? (e.g Category:1901 and 1901) I'm thinking that may be overkill. As long as we make wikilinks every time a year is used, you can get the same results by using the What links here on the 1901 page. T

Also, I don't think we need to create the "Category:YYYY Births" and Category:YYYY Deaths" if there is no birth or death for that year.

What do you think? Joe P. 04:05, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

I agree wholeheartedly, believe me. I was doing my best to follow the previous Template:Year. Before I go back through and continue, I just want to make sure I'm correct in understanding.

1)"Category:YYYY Births" and "Category:YYYY Deaths" need to be taken off the empty births/deaths categories. This would leave numerous blank Categories to be deleted.

I updated the template {{year}} so that it will automatically only show the ones that actually have been created. Don't worry about deleting old ones. Just don't create any more, unless there is an actual birth or death to go in the category. I just have a personal pet peeve with categories that don't have any items in them. They don't hurt anything though.

2) The births/deaths/books categories that contain media, should be left in other categories? (e.g. taking off "Category:YYYY" of "Books published in YYYY" and leaving "Category:Books published in the YYYYs"). The ones that don't contain media could be deleted.

Let me see how Wikipedia does it first. I'll get back with you on this.

3) All "Category:YYYY" would no longer be in [[Category:Years]] and the "Category:YYYY" would have to be taken care of, as they would all be empty as well.

That is what I was asking, but I'm not convinced if we should leave them or not. I'm thinking again, we should see what Wikipedia does and follow their convention. I just wanted to get your opinion first. If you thought all these categories were beneficial, I would leave them as we are doing them.

Is this what you were thinking? Lucas Cray 22:46, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

OK - I looked on Wikipedia real quick and we have been doing basically what they do. So I guess my advice is to do exactly what you have been doing except don't create a category unless there is something actually in it. A way to look for which categories that have something in it, but have not yet created is to check the link:Special:WantedCategories. Joe P. 23:41, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Moving this discussion

I moved this discussion over to Category_talk:Years so we can start creating the guidance. Please feel free to add your thoughts. I'm open to whatever suggestions would make MagicPedia easier to navigate. Joe P. 14:28, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Please add your thoughts to Category_talk:Years on how we should organize the years. I keep going back and forth. I'm now leaning towards subcategorizing years by only centuries (no decades). Joe P. 17:56, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Request

If you have time, can you do these two years: 1960 (50 years ago) and 1910. (100 years ago)? Joe P. 09:05, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Done. Lucas Cray 16:14, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! I hope you noticed I used it on the Front Page. Joe P. 04:05, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

On this day

For the MagicPedia:Selected_anniversaries which show up automatically on the Main page under "On this day", I think the only one I'm missing a day for the entire year is MagicPedia:Selected_anniversaries/august_8. If you happen to come across anything magic related for that day, please add it! Joe P. 03:05, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

PersonInfo

Please use the new Template:Infobox person (instead of PersonInfo).

No problem. Cool Template. Lucas Cray 02:06, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
