William Henry Young (1821-1874) performed as "The Juvenile Magician—The Wonder of the Age", "Mr. Young", "Professor Young."[1]
Biography
Apprenticed to a shoemaker, he ran away to sea at the age of twelve. After spending some unpleasant time at sea, he returned home and became interested in magic by watching his father perform (who became interested in magic after seeing Richard Potter). He made his debut at the Artists' Gallery in Boston in October of 1835 as "The Juvenile Magician—The Wonder of the Age."
Along with magic, he would sometimes exhibited acrobatics and juggling. Young traveled many years, first with his farther, then with his brother Lorenzo and later with his wife, appearing throughout the United States and even visited some of the Carribean Islands, Cuba and British possessions.[2]
Most of what is known about Young comes from his assistant Edwin Fay Rice.[3]
