Carlton (b.1880-d.1942) was the stage name of Arthur Philps who performed as "the human hairpin".
Biography
He developed a presentation of the Die Box, which many use today, in 1907. Started off working as a 'barker' for a side-show at the Westminster Aquarium then worked for Jennings, a showman who specialised in illusions. But, found success as a comedy, card magician playing every important tour in the UK and other countries, receiving salaries that no other card magician had been known to get.
He worked for ENSA during World War Two.
