St. Roman (1829-1918) was born Samuel Thiersfeld in Austria-Hungary. He abandoned being a pastry cook for a life of music and magic in 1857.

He was a violinist and his act consisted of magic, celebrities impersonations and music.

He was a pupil of Hofzinser and was doing the Card through Handkerchief effect by 1897.
