Charles F. Fillebrown (1834-1903), an actor and magician, was described in 1891 as America's oldest Professor of Magic.[1][2]

Biography

At a very young age, he traveled with the John Denier Pantomime Company. In addition to magic, Fillebrown performed ventriloquism and used marionettes. Another of his credits was with the Howard Burlesque Company for the season of 1859-60.[3]

He made his first professional appearance in Newburyport in 1854, and would continue to perform until within the last two years of his life traveling about the United States and Canada.[4][5]

Milton Chase, of Boston, made tricks for him for over forty years ago.

He served in the army (Company G, First Heavy Artillery) during the Civil War and appeared in many field hospitals to cheer his comrades.[6][7]
