Herr Alexander (1819-1909) performed as a professional magician in Germany, North American and South America during the 1800s.[1]

Biography

He began his career as the assistant to the German traveling magician Feidinand Becker.

For a couple of years, he also performed as an acrobat and exhibited Phantasmagoria. At the end of 1843 he went to the United States, where he performed with considerable success.[2]

B. T. Barnum sought out his services and he played at the White House for President Polk on several occasions..

Houdini, who had several interviews with Herr Alexander before the latter's death in 1909, stated that he played in North and South America from 1844 until 1854 and that during this period he was able to accumulate a fortune large enough to enable him to retire upon his return to Germany.[3]
