Neil Patrick Harris is an amateur magician, which he once demonstrated on a Jerry Lewis telethon. He is a member of the Magic Castle which he was also voted onto the Board of Directors, the first celebrity to be handed the honor since Cary Grant.

He has performed magic tricks on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" (1962), "Late Show with David Letterman" (1993), "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (1992), and "Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show" (2003)

Neil was on the cover of Genii 2006 September performing Palingenesia.

He also teamed with Guy Hollingworth to direct "The Expert at the Card Table" a small, intimate play that ran from July 13 to August 7 2011 at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, California. Written by Hollingworth, the show is an adaptation about the author of the influential book and how it came to be. He also directed "Nothing to Hide", a magic show starring Derek DelGaudio and Helder Guimeraes. The show was also written by DelGaudio and choreographed by Guimeraes.
